WAGAKUSHA

   Scholars of wa (Japan). A general term for scholars of the Tokugawa period (starting with Tokugawa, Mitsukuni of the Mito school) who studied native Japanese texts rather than the Chinese classics. It includes heroes of the Shinto revival movements such as Kamo no Mabuchi, Motoori Norinaga and Hirata Atsutane.
